E-writing assignment 2.3

Create a scenario of your own (involving 2-4 characters) without describing it and then convert it into a self-contained dialogue of no more than 500 words. Our job as your readers will be to work out as much as we can about the scenario and the characters involved from the dialogue alone.

The Dragon

“A pleasure to meet you, I’m Jill.” Jill said and offered her hand as she was squinting in the bright sunlight.
“Likewise, I’m Ian, the best-man. This is my wife, Holly.”
“Hello, Holly, what a lovely dress.” Jill eyed the young woman up and down admiringly.
“Thank you. It’s not too much? Ian thought it would be. He didn’t want me to outshine the bride.”
“She’s so darn lovely, I thought we would be getting in trouble, her wearing something like that.”
“You two are the cutest couple ever, after the two getting married of course.” Jill said with a twinkle in her eye.
“We are happily married.” Holly said.
“How long have you two been married?”
“Two years on Friday.” Ian said with a big smile.
“Congratulations! Love is hard to find these days.”
“She wasn’t hard to find at all. She fell onto me like a rock.” Ian laughed.
“She fell onto you?”
“You should tell the story, honey. You give it justice.” Ian said to his wife.
“Jill doesn’t want to hear our story. It’s too sleazy.”
“No, please! I’d love to hear it!”
“Ok, then.” Holly smiled. “It was new years eve 2008. I and Ian were attending the same party. The groom’s party, actually...”
“I was on that party too!” Jill said interrupting.
“Really? I didn’t see you there?” Ian said surprised. “ I think I would have noticed you.”
“Well, it was a masquerade-party, I didn’t see anyone.” Jill giggled.
“Anyway...” Holly continued. “I saw The Big Bad Wolf standing all alone in the corner. By the bar.”
“That would be me!” Ian said with a smile.
“He looked so lonely without his Little Red Riding Hood. And as it happened, I went as The Little Red Riding Hood.”
“That had to be a sign or something, because I’ve never seen such a beautiful creature in my whole life. A pure red-head and all!”
“There was only one thing in the way.” Holly looked serious. “Ian’s ex.”
“The Dragon, we call her.” Ian interrupted her once again.
“Yes, the dragon.” Holly continued, clearly irritated about the interruption.
“So what happened next?”
“Nothing. I went home and tried to forget about her.”
“But, how...?”
“Well, six months later I went skydiving.” Holly continued. “Lost control and had to land in the village park. Ian and his friends, including the groom, were sunbathing and I fell right into his lap.”
“No way! Were you hurt?”
“No, just lost control of the steering. Not a biggie.” Holly said with a huge smile showing all of her white straight teeth.
“It was then we realized that we were meant to be. Six months later we got married.” Ian said proudly putting his arm around his wife’s small waist.
“Wow, that’s quite a story!” Holly said. “What happened to The Dragon?”
“She’s the bride!”

E-writing assignment 2.2

Create and briefly describe a scenario of your own (involving 2-4 characters) and then write a matching dialogue to go with it. As with the task above, try to bring your scenario to some sort of close in the actual dialogue. Target length (including scenario description): 350-750 words.

Father and son

Martha and Joe have been married for twenty-five years. They live in an idyllic suburban area outside a major city. They have two kids, a son named Jason, and a daughter named Kate. Kate goes to college in another city, while Jason goes to college nearby and still lives at home with his parents.

“Mom, Dad, I need to speak with you.” Jason says from the top of the stairs. He is anxious to get their attention. “It’s important!” he yells to be sure they’ll listen. “And while you’re at it mum, would you make us some coffee!” He goes back to his room waiting.

As his mom yells that coffee is ready, Jason takes a deep breath and joins them at the kitchen table.
“What is it, Jase?” his mom asks. She sees his worried eyes and instinctually gets up to once again take care of her little boy.
“Just sit down, mom. I have something I must tell the two of you.”
“What is it, son? Can’t it wait until the game is over?” dad asks anxious to get back to the TV.
“No, it can’t. I can’t wait any longer.”
“Spit it out then!” Jason’s dad id getting increasingly hurried.
“Well, it’s not that easy. I’ve been meaning to tell you for ages but it just never seems to be the right time.”
“Oh my God. What is it, Jase? Is it drugs?” mom asks and starts crying.
“No, it’s not drugs, mom.”
“Did you knock up some poor girl?” dad asks with big eyes.
“No.”
“Are you ill, honey? Are you not feeling well?” his mum urges on.
“I’m not sick.”
“What is it then?!” Dad asks.
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m seeing someone?”
“Is this what it’s all about -you seeing some girl? You almost gave your mother a heart attack!” mom says, breathing heavily.
“Sort of. He’s name is Beau, and I love him... I had to tell you.” The kitchen becomes silence, and you could hear a pin drop. Martha and Joe looks confused, not really understanding what their son had just told them.
“Sorry, but did you just say Beau? Isn’t that a boy’s name?” dad finally asks.
“It is. Beau is a boy.”
“Beau is a boy? You’re in love with a boy?” mom says while she starts crying more heavily than before.
“Mom, Dad… I’m gay.” Jason says while smiling with relief, as s heavy weight has just been lifted from his shoulders. He feels alive, and free to be himself now that he being gay is all in the open.
“You are not!” dad screams spoiling Jason’s short moment of joy. “It can’t be! You love sports and you have had girlfriends?”
“I am. I’m gay. I still love sports, but I never loved a girl. I was just pretending to be something that I’m not. Now that I’m with Beau, it just feels right. I can’t pretend anymore.”
“We will get you some help. This is sick! We go to church on Sunday and Father Damon will help you, I’m sure of it. It can’t be. Not my only son?” Dad says, he starts to cry. Jason had never seen his father cry before.
“Please, Dad. Don’t be like this. I just can’t pretend anymore. Can’t you see this is me?”
“You are not gay! And if you are, you are a sinner just like all the other sissies! This is not the son I raised!”
“Joe, please!” mom interrupts. “We’ll sort it out. It will be fine.”
“It will not be fine! I don’t want a butt-fucker under my roof!” he looks at his son in anger. “You have to make a choice Jason. Go and be with your sissy boyfriend and never return here again. Or you stay with us and go talk to the priest. He can heal you.”
“Dad, are you serious? Really? You want me to choose?”
“Make your choice Jason, and make the right one!”
“Then I choose the only thing I can. I chose to be me. I chose love.” Jason says leaving the kitchen table and both of his parents, not knowing if he ever will return.

E-writing assignment 2.1

Select a scenario, copy it to your page and then write a matching dialogue to go with it. Whatever your choice, try to bring the scenario to some sort of close in the actual dialogue. Target length: 250-500 words.

The Elevator

Two office workers who know but dislike each other are trapped in a lift/an elevator with a sales representative who they've never met before but who they're both immediately attracted to. Help is on its way.

“Damn it! Not again!” said Elma as the elevator stopped.
"I don’t have time for this. I'm  supposed to be meeting a sales rep from FedEx in about 5 minutes.” said Karol, pushing all the buttons as if it would help.
“That would be me.” said the stranger. “I’m Allen. A pleasure to meet you.”
"Really, I wouldn't have guessed." Karol said.
"How so?"
"All the sales reps they've sent us so far have been, short, bald and ugly."
"I'm glad that you don't put me in any of those categories." he said with a big grin that Karol responded to with a flirty smile.
“Now that we all know each other, how about trying to get out of this damn elevator?” Elma said sourly to Karol while checking out Allen's muscular body with desire.
“Relax, Elma.” said Karol. “You are always so stressed out. Just relax.”
“That’s easy for you to say, being the boss' favourite pet!”
“What?” Karol looked at her as if she didn’t know what Elma was talking about.
“You know what I’m talking about! Don’t try to deny it.”
“I really don’t. Please tell me.”
“Ladies, please. Just relax. I’m sure help is on the way. Let me take care of this.” he said, interrupting just in time. He pushed the emergency button for ten seconds and the alarm went off. “See, it won’t be long.”
“Well, Allen. We have been stuck in this elevator before. It always takes some time. At least this time we have a hunk with us.” Karol smiled.
“Oh, will you just shut up?! I can’t bear being stuck here with you. Just sit down and shut up, please.”
“What is with you, Elma? What is your problem?”
“You are. You are my problem.”
“Now that we have such a great opportunity, would you like to sort it out? Get it all in the open?” Allen interrupted. Karol started crying.
“You see Allen. The women at my department all seem to hate me ever since I advanced from assistant to director.”
“Why is that?” Allen asked.
“Jealousy I guess.”
“Don’t be stupid!” Elma said. “That’s not it, you know why!”
“I really don’t. Please! Tell me Elma.” Karol said through her tears.
“It’s not a secret. We all know you screwed your way to the top.”
“Don’t be ridiculous!” Karol laughed. “Is that what everybody thinks? I thought everyone knew Mr. Smith had a boyfriend!”

Elma looked at Karol. Feeling embarassed.
“I’m sorry.” Elma said and embraced her new found friend. “I didn’t know what to think. Seeing you hitting on Allen just now made me act real stupid. Will you forgive me?”

“Sure. Don’t think about it.” Karol wiped her tears.
"I don't know how to say this Karol, but I find you so attractive I can't even think straight."

“You two should kiss and make up.” Allen smiled. Elma and Karol looked at him smiling back. They looked at each other and started kissing. As the elevator started to move, Allen joined in.
